Solar Eclipse Glasses

Please note, to buy stock safe solar eclipse glasses, please visit www.eclipseglasses.com

Wondering whether the eclipse glasses you used for the 2017 solar eclipse can still be used for the next solar eclipse, which will occur in 2024 in North America? Eclipse glasses, which are sometimes called solar viewers, may be printed with an expiration date. However, this doesn’t mean that the glasses can no longer be used.

If they are not damaged — scratched, torn, or dented — eclipse glasses may be reused indefinitely, according to NASA. This is true for brand-new eclipse glasses purchased for the 2017 solar eclipse as well as any glasses that were made after 2015, because those glasses are compliant with the newer ISO 12312-2 standard that was adopted that year. However, glasses manufactured prior to 2015 may have expired after three years.

What Should People Do with Used Solar Eclipse Glasses?

People who do not realize that eclipse glasses can be reused may simply throw them away. But eclipse glasses that are no longer needed can be donated to various organizations, including schools and astronomical clubs. Astronomers Without Borders even collected reusable eclipse glasses for a year after the 2017 solar eclipse to provide them to children in South America and Asia, in preparation for the solar eclipse of 2019.

Eclipse glasses are essential in places that will only experience a partial solar eclipse because there is no time when it’s safe to view the eclipse without the glasses. However, Astronomers Without Borders has since stopped collecting eclipse glasses.

For eclipse glasses that are damaged, the lenses can be removed and the cardboard or paper frames recycled.

Taking Care of Your Solar Eclipse Glasses

Users should be careful about how they store their eclipse glasses if they intend to use them for a future eclipse. Because eclipse glasses with paper frames are easily bent or torn, buyers may need to purchase new glasses for the next solar eclipse. Doing so ahead of time ensures that glasses are available and are not sold out.

Because of the 2015 standard, we know that eclipse glasses we sell now can still be used for the 2024 eclipse as long as users take care of those eclipse glasses. Shoppers can consider plastic eclipse glasses that are more durable than the cardboard style and may fit better as well.

Buyer Beware

Due to the popularity of a solar eclipse, some companies have begun making and selling fraudulent eclipse glasses complete with the NASA logo. Buyers should check their eclipse glasses for safety information printed on the frame including the CE certification (scale 12-16 of EN 169/1992), ISO certification (ISO 12312-2:2015), and certification required by other countries.

Shoppers should only buy glasses to view eclipses from reputable sellers that are recommended by astronomical organizations to avoid purchasing glasses that may not protect their eyes during an eclipse. When you buy from us, you can feel confident that our Eclipsers® glasses will protect your eyes while allowing you to experience the wonder of a solar eclipse!
